The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, will leave Wellington for the north by the Limited, express tonight. Mr C. C. Scrimgeour, Controller of Commercial Broadcasting, will arrive at Auckland today on his return from a visit to the United States of America.
Mr and Mrs F. T. Day and family, of Bannockburn, Gladstone, have returned from a holiday spent with Mr and Mrs R. A. Renall, of Paihia, Bay of Islands, and late of Wairarapa. Mrs C. L. Edgeworth Williams (Napier), Mr and Mrs T. Maxwell (Waiuku), Messrs R. Solon, R. Barney (Napier), H. L. Acton-Adams (Kaikoura), and G. I. Windleborn (Hamilton) are guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Guests at the Empire Hotel, Masterton, include: Mr and Mrs Mason, Mr Fallwell (Auckland), Mr and Mrs Lissaman (Taranaki), Mr Rogers (Marton), Miss Jefferd, Mr R. Caro (Hastings), Mr Johnston (Hawke’s Bay), Messrs H. J. Peacock, Girling-Butcher and Merriman (Wellington). An announcement that Cabinet approval had been obtained for Group Captain L. M. Isitt, A.D.C., Air Member for Personnel on the New Zealand Air Board, to proceed to the United Kingdom in October for a short term of duty at the Air Ministry and to attend the Imperial Defence College during 1940, was made last evening by th’e Minister of Defence, Mr Jones.
Six nominations have been received for the one vacancy on the Wellington Education Board for the Hutt-Horo-whenua rural area of the education district. Nominations closed yesterday, and the following will be candidates at the poll to be held on June 29: W. W. Bird, F. G. Molesworth, S. H. D. Peryman, D. Richards, A. E. Robinson, W. J. T. Wiggs.
Formerly branch manager of ,the Bank of New Zealand in various parts of New Zealand, Mr Stanley Thomas Norton, aged 63, died at his home in Auckland. Mr Norton entered the service of the bank in Christchurch, and was associated with it till about six years ago, when he resigned his position as manager in Paparoa. Soon after coming to Auckland to live, Mi' Norton met with an accident, suffering serious injuries, from the effects oi which he never recovered. He is survived by his widow. Prominent in business, local body administration and aquatic sport in Auckland for many years, Mr John Hislop, Devonport, former Mayor of Devonport, died in a private hospital after a brief illness, states a Press Association message from Auckland. Mr Hislop was managing director of Walker. and Hall (N.Z.), Limited. Born in Dunedin in 1876, Mr Hislop married Miss Gertrude Hudson, daughter of Mr Richard Hudson, founder of the firm of R. Hudson and Company. He was the founder of the Sanders Memorial Cup contests in 1921, and of the Cornwell Cup contests. Mr Hislop is survived by Mrs Hislop, one son and two daughters.
