HORSES FROM AMERICA

EMBARGO ON IMPORTATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Because of the prevalence of disease among horses in the United States of America and Canada, the importation of horses from those country into New Zealand is now prohibited. A similar prohibition was imposed by Australia a few weeks ago, and’ New Zealand, in effecting the embargo, the necessarj' authority for which appears in last night’s “Gazette,” is acting in co-ordination with the Commonwealth. Because of this disease (equine encephalomyelitis) there has been a considerable mortality rate among horses in the United States of America and Canada recently, and the New Zealand embargo will remain in force till the position is reviewed. The only horses imported from the United States into New Zealand are trotters, but it is considered that a precautionary embargo will not seriously affect trotting interests in the Dominion.
