TURF NEWS AND NOTES

Although Recollection only ran second to Pink Robe in the June Hurdles, he is sure to be well supported again. Actually Recollection lost his chance through faulty hurdling. Pink Robe finished strongly in that event, beating the favourite by a length and should again prove troublesome. Metal Bird was also well up in this race but fell at the second last hurdle. Vantoon scored over Pink Robe in the Otago Hurdles on the first day and should not find the extra five pounds too great a handicap. Fireguard might find 10.12 too much, although that horse is sure to receive support. Of the others, Last Link and Mount Vai appear the best, but the field looks too classy for them to be very seriously considered. Public opinion might favour Recollection. Pink Robe. Vantoon or Fireguard. ELECTRIC HANDICAP; six furlongs

The top weight, Black Bard, has not run well enough of late to make him a favourite and in view of Airdie's form in the Novice Handicap at Dunedin that horse will be favoured by a lot. Neptune is another who did not go so well on the first and second days at Dunedin, but is expected to run a good race. Royal Style scored a nice third in the Novice and will be supported. Of the others, Blue Dawn. Lights Out and Georgia should not bother the top weights and support might corne for Airdine Royal Style Black Bard.

The top weight in this event, Rebel Mate, ran third to Fleet Street in the Winter Handicap at Dunedin, and as he is only carrying a pound more, he will be strongly fancied. Straightdell scored two good seconds at Dunedin over the first day’s racing, and with only 8.4 up must be a prospect. Skyrena’s win in the St. Clair Handi- ■ cap was a close one. Astaire, who was well backed in this race, was not there at the finish and should not give the top weights much to worry ' about. Of the rest, Flagman and Phalanx might go well, but it is very doubtful if they will be in a place. Most fancied might be Straightdell. Skyrena ' Fleet Street.

Disband may be in need of a race or two before coming into true form. Combat was a popular choice in the Southern Handicap and although he looked a possible winner as they entered the straight, he fell away to fill fourth position. Green Boa won nicely over this distance at Dunedin, but the increase in weight may make , a decided difference. Kippen is a form horse and is, sure to go well. Lady Sincere scored a third down south and seems in good form. Astral Flash does not impress, nor does Silver Choir. Most support may come for Kippen Lady Sincere Green Boa. DUNEDIN STEEPLECHASE; about 2.’ miles. Black Banner 12 10 Slayer 9 0 Gold Wren .119 Rifle Range .. 9 0 El Caballo .... 10 1 La Boca 9 0 Chile 9 0 Red Terror .. 9 0 Gold Wren will in all probability be a red hot favourite for the Dunedin s Steeplechase. Although the increase in weight is considerable this horse should be able to carry the load comfortably. El Gaballo scored easily in the Tahuna Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at Dunedin and will go out carrying plenty of public confidence. Black Banner may experience trouble with 12.10 up. Chile and Slayer have both been knocking at the door and will make the leaders move. La Boca is a horse who -might capture favour. The best liked may include Gold Wren El Caballo Slayer

RACING FIXTURES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Dunedin Jockey Club’s Concluding Day i GOLD WREN IS STRONG FANCY FOR STEEPLECHASE KING GEORGE HANDICAP SHOULD PRODUCE THRILLING RACE ’(By “CARBINE.”) Judging by the fields that will contest the last day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting, to be held on Saturday, the public should be treated to a good day’s racing. All the events will be keenly contested and some surprises are almost-sure to result. Chief interest will probably be centred round the Dunedin Steeplechase and i wi be interesting to see if Gold Wren can carry off this event as we as the Otago Steeplechase last week. Another interesting race on the programme is the King George Handicap, a distance of one mile. Class horses are contesting this event and a close and thrilling finish seems assured.

Nightcalm carried 9.7 to victory in the Winter Handicap, a distance of six furlongs, at Dunedin, and should be with the leaders in the run home. Thermidor scored nicely over a mile and two furlongs at the same meeting, and is expected to put up a good show. Second Innings was also a winner at Dunedin, and will have to be seriously considered. Passaform will also be a contender for place honours, while Spanish Lad, Night Hawk and Araboa should all help to make an interesting race of it. Those finding favour may include Nightcalm Thermidor. Second Innings. TAINUI HANDICAP; seven furlongs.

Silver Streak has top Weight and may find Ihe rest of the field just a little too good. Second Innings may not be a starter, but if he does the race will be a good one. Lazybones will carry a big weight increase in 9.1. Straightdell must be considered. This horse scored two seconds in the one day at Dunedin, and there is no reason why the performance should not be repeated. Sir Hugh and Valantua are coming into form and the top weight will not have the race all their own way. Skyrena at the distance will also receive support. Those impressing the public might be Silver 'Streak Lazybones Straightdell or Skyrena ALDWORTH HANDICAP; lm. 2J£.

Green Boa is carrying a heavy load in this , race and the distance mightprove too great. Bow Street will probably want for a race or two. Spear Thrust, won well at Dunedin last zweekend and will be well supported. Of the rest, Hunting Chorus and Doctor Duthie look the best. Support might come for Spearthrust Green Boa Hunting Chorus.
