FOR THE SECOND TIME
Charlie McCarthy wins RADIO POLL. Charlie McCarthy, for the second successive year, has been voted King of the Airways in U.S.A. In the annual nation-wide poll of six hundred radio editors and columnists conducted by the “Motion Picture Daily,” Charlie again won the title “Champion of Champions.” Besides winning the sweepstake as No. 1 radio entertainer for 1938, Charlie and his boss, Edgar Bergen, ran second in the comedy team division, won by Burns and Allen. Charlie also ran third in the comedian division, which was won by Jack Benny, with Fred Allen second. McCarthy and Bergen, in addition to their weekly radio broadcasts, arc featured in Universal Pictures, and will soon be seen with W. C. Fields in a pretentious comedy, “You Can’t Cheat an Honest Man.” Informed that he had won the highest honours in the field of radio, McCarthy issued the following brief statement: — Now that I have set Mr Bergen in his place, I will next make a monkey of Mr Fields. Won’t his face turn red when they give me the Academy Award?
