OLD TREES FELLED PLANTED OVER 70 YEARS AGO. Pinus insignus trees that have stood upon the property of Mr Colin Campbell, Clareville, for close upon 70 years, were yesterday felled by la staff of men and afterwards conveyed to Messrs C. E. Daniell’s sawmill at Masterton. One tree in particular stood out for size and it took a long time before the workmen were able to cut it down. From the tree many thousands of feet of timber should be obtained. Considerable interest attaches to these trees. They were originally among a consignment of trees and gorse that were brought over the Rimutaka Hill by coach in 1868, some of the trees going to the late Mr John Smith of “Round Bush” farm, the property which Mr Colin Campbell now occupies. Some of the gorse was ordered by the late Mr Thomas Ray, who was proprietor of the Taratahi Hotel at that time. This particular gorse was planted near the hotel on the southern side almost opposite Mr W. Howard Booth’s homestead. At that time" an apple orchard was planted on the same section, and stood there for very many years until the gorse became a nuisance .and the trees past usefulness. It is said by old identities that the gorse planted there was the first brought into the 'Wairarapa and it was then considered good business. Today gorse is gazetted a noxious weed.
