Deaths from Diphtheria.
Two deaths (children) from diphtheria and 13 cases of the disease were reported to the Wellington office of the Health Department from the Central Wellington area last week. The number of cases was stated to be approximately the same as for the same period last year. Price to Producer—and Consumer. A contrast between the prices received by the farmer for ewe mutton and for wool, and the prices paid by consumers, was drawn by Mr. I. L. M. Coop, president of the North Canterbury district of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, at the annual provincial conference. “The sheepfarmer is celling principally ewe mutton for meat at Id to 2d per lb wholesale, but think what the consumers have to pay retail.” he said. “We are also selling wool at from 6d to Is per lb., yet tf you have a loom of your own and want to buy that wool back ready for weaving, you have to pay 8s per lb. Surely there must be some method of closing the gap, so that both consumer and producer may have a decent standard of living.”
