GOLFING NOTES
MAHUNGA CLUB CONTESTS PERMANENT GREENS IN USE. COMMENT ON WEEKEND PLAY. (By “Par”). The series of competitions held bj r the Mahunga Golf Club on its links during the King's Birthday weekend attracted excellent entries, including visiting players from the Wellington. Bideford, Tyneside. Riverside and Masterton clubs. The prizes were well distributed and some exceptionally good scores were recorded, the weather conditions being ideal. Everybody appeared to be well pleased with the general arrangements of the tournament. Visitors were impressed with the improvements effected to the club’s links during recent months. The temporary greens used during the period in which the permanent greens were being laid down have improved the approaches to the latter greens. On Saturday the permanent greens were used for the first time this season. The greens played particularly true, so much so that many players, after their experiences on the temporary greens, were quite unaccustomed to the new conditions and were unable to gauge the strength of their putting. •During the weekend much interest was shown in the Stableford competition, in which some good scoring was recorded. R. Hendry, who plays a nice stick, put up a splendid performance by recording a round five strokes below his handicap. It was a good effort. It was pleasing to see D. A. Hunn have a return to form. On Saturday, for the first time this season, he played below his handicap. He can play good golf when he is’ in form. By returning a net 67, J. Sievers, a new player, is entitled to a reduction in handicap. The fact that L. Roach is still playing steady golf was indicated by his net 67, which will allow a reduction of his handicap. I. I. McGregor had the satisfaction of returning a card three strokes below his handicap, his score being a net 68. Consistent playing is being maintained by R. Lendrum, who'has five 71’s and two lO’S 1 to his credit this season.
It is pleasing to know that W. Boyce, a limit player, will shortly earn a reduction in handicap.
A goo<T“effort was made by R. B. McPherson, who again played under his handicap. For the first time this season, W. L. Free played a net 69. It is to be hoped that he will maintain the form he showed on Saturday. R. L. Hughes, by returning a card for a net 70 shows that he is a consistent performer. lan McFarlane plays a very attractive game. He is quite at home in medal rounds and if he could develop a match temperament he would have a bright future as a golfer. Both A. H. Ward and V. Burridge played well to their handicaps. During the coming weekend, an in-' ter-club match, in conjunction with which will be a challenge contest for the Dominion Life Challenge Cup, will be held at Mahunga with the Bideford Club. The first eight players in the club will compete in the trophy contest. The match committee is faced with some difficulty in selecting the team, as it is hard to know who to leave out of the team.
