CARTERTON

DEATH OF MRS BOWYER OLD RESIDENT OF DISTRICT. (“Times-Age" Special.) The death occurred at her residence at Belvedere on Saturday of Mrs M. A. Bowyer after a lengthy illness. The late Mrs Bowyer was born in Birmingham, England, 68 years ago and came out to Nev/ Zealand with her parents and a brother in 1886. They landed in Wellington and after a few days spent in the Empire City came on to Carterton. The family eventually resided at Dalefield where Mr Roberts (deceased’s father) was employed at the late Mr Thos. Price’s sawmill, as blacksmith and engine driver. After spending five years at Dalefield the family went to Belvedere where Mr Roberts purchased a small farrp. The deceased married Mr Wm. Bowyer. It was during Mr Roberts’s life that the two farms were joined. Upon the death of Mrs Bowyer’s parents, 20 acres and the house became her property. For many years the property vzas run as a dairy farm, but for some years past the land has been let for winter grazing purposes. The late Mrs Bowyer leaves a brother, Mr Fred Roberts. The funeral took place yesterday at the Clareville Cemetery. The cortege was a large one. A short service was held at the residence by the Rev. H. White, Methodist Minister, who afterwards conducted the service at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. Vaughan, D. A. McPhee, C. Zabell, and C. J. DeLacey. The deceased was predeceased by her husband five years ago. GOLF TOURNAMENT SEVEN PLAYERS QUALIFY. On the Carterton links on Saturday, the Carterton men’s club commenced a tourney, the result of which will be finalised after today’s play. The first seven to qualify were: H. Dudson 77, C. Clark 78, J. Steel 79, G. S. George 80, Geo. Brown 81, R. Fisher 82, Smith 93. MATCH SCORE. The best match score, was gained by Dwane and Bond, 86, 24. 62 each. CHAMPIONSHIP AND FLIGHT. The first round in the championship and flight match played at the weekend in connection With the bogey competition .resulted as follows: —Dwane won the bogey competition, 3 up; Dudson beat Brown, 2 and 1: Steel beat Booth, 2 and 1; George beat Smith, 5 and 4; Clark beat Fisher, 4 and 3. In the flight competition, Whitburn beat Colson, Dwane beat Hart, Gustofson beat R. Lawrence, Bond beat Harrington. Second Flight. — Shankland beat Tankersley, B. Beaven beat Lane, Forbes beat Taylor, Candy beat E. T. Beaven. Personals. Having disposed of his farm Mr W. H. Griggs, of Carrington, who has been resident in the district as a successful Ayrshire breeder and dairy farmer, and who is going to live with his daughter at Napier, will be tendered’a farewell by the residents in the Belvedere schoolhouse tonight. Belvedere Dairy Factory. Owing to the fact that the Taratahi dairy factory has closed down and that several dairy farmers from that factory will supply Belvedere, it is expected . a further vat will be in work at the factory next season.
