Gillespie continues his special illustrated articles on New Zealand industries with a good review of tin making and tin printing. Derric McD. Vincent tells a vivid story of old Whakatane in the “Capture of the Brig ‘Haweia.’ ” Many New Zealanders will be interested in the story of Thomas Bracken’s hymn. “God Defend New Zealand,” which has been chosen as the Dominion’s National Anthem by the New Zealand Centennial Council. There are reproductions of letters written by Sir Geo. Grey, Richard Seddon and Thomas Bracken to John Joseph Woods who composed the music for the hymn. Chas. E. Wheeler gives bright impressions of a motor tour through the Lewis Pass. Buller Gorge and down the West Coast to the Glaciers. Joyce West recalls romantic Maori stories about Lake Roto-a-ira and mountains between Lake Taupo and Tongariro. In the Battle of Ohacawao Edmund L. Reed cleverly describes the disastrous onset of Colonel Despard against a strongly fortified Pa in the Bay of Islands during Heke’s war. Other features include original verse, helpful notes and comments for women, a chat on books and authors and a review of sport.
