SANDERS CUP
HARRIER CONTEST. WIN FOR HUTT VALLEY. Saturday afternoon marked the sixteenth annual contest for the Sanders Cup between the Masterton and the Hutt Valley Harrier clubs. The Hutt Club was successful in its challenge, defeating the Masterton Club, holders of the Cup, by 130 points to 179, thus winning for the eighth alternative time.
Thirty-one harriers were started by Mr A. W. Todd (vice-president of the Masterton Club) over a five mile twolap course laid by Messrs J. J. Hunter and R. Bell. Mr J. Buckton was timekeeper. The trail followed the Waipoua deviation stopbank, over the Colombo Road Bridge, along the Waipoua riverbed and thence back over tussocky country and down the Te Ore Ore Road to the Allan Memorial Bridge, back to the new suspension bridge, and around again, with half a lap around the Park Oval.
G. Gregory and W. Pullar established an early lead from a bunched field, with R. Goss (Hutt) and Patterson (Hutt) following closely behind. The field strung out before the Colombo Road Bridge was reached. Gregory, Pullar, Goss (Hutt), Patterson (Hutt), and C. Talbot (Hutt) running in the leading bunch. Dumble (Hutt), R. Wyeth and R. Shaw (Masterton), following behind. Along the Waipoua riverbed, G. Turner, Pritchard, Petersen and Robbie were all bunched, and furthei’ behind H. Carle, C. K. Long, G. Wickens and Ashley Andrew were moving up fast. Lewis, Goss, Payne. Sheeham, all Hutt men, mi’ssed the trail, and were passed by C. Ross, C. Orr. R. Gully and Bob Bell. The Hutt men soon made up the lost ground, and forged ahead to join the second bunch. The order of the field remained unchanged until the suspension bridge was reached for the start of the second' lap, when Roy Shaw and Ron Wyeth improved their position, moving up fast. H. Carle also bettered his position. The rearguard remained unchanged, C. J. Carle and K. Forrest mistaking the race for an easy training run.
When the Park Oval was reached G. Gregory had established a considerable lead from W. Pullar, who also lead easily from Goss (Hutt). Gregory’s time of 29min. Isec. was exceedingly fast for the course. The following are the individual placings for the teams’ race of 12 men:—G. Gregory (M), 1; W. Pullar (M), 2; R. Goss (H), 3; Patterson (H). 4; R.
