FROZEN MEAT TRADE
LONDON QUOTATIONS ADVANCE IN LAMB PRICES. MUTTON MARKET IMPROVES. Lamb market: Prices have further advanced, with tone of market strong. Mutton market: Withers and ewes meeting with improved demand at the better prices. Beef market Frozen, fair trade at the unchanged prices; chilled, firmer this week on the lighter supplies. New Zealand porker pigs: Lightweights firmer but trade generally slow. New Zealand baconer pigs: Quiet, with prices unchanged. Boneless bobby veal: Firm on the lighter supplies. The above report was received yesterday by the Meat Board from its London office, which advises that the following are the ruling prices of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of frozen meat mentioned, and are for representative parcels of the goods sold on Thursday.' Chilled beef prices are averages of the week. All prices are on the basis of delivered to Smithfield Market. Messrs Levin & Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents dated June 1, 1939. —Frozen meat quotations (prices on a delivered basis, i.e, including storage charges, cartage, market tolls, etc): —North Island dpwn lambs, 28/36 lbs, 7sd per lb; 36/42, 6 5-Bd. Best North Island xbred lambs, 28/361bs, 7d; 36/421bs, 6£d. North Island 2nd quality lambs, av. 30/311bs, 6 5-Bd. Best North Island wether sheep under 481 b, 4id; ditto 48/56, 3 7-8 d; ditto 56/64, 31d; ditto 64/72, 3:'d. North Island ewes, under 481bs, 3 5-8 d; 48/56’s, 3d; 56/64’s, 27-8 d; 64/72’s, 2 5-Bd. N.Z. prime ox beef, 160/220, none offering. Compared with last week’s quotations, down lambs are .’,d per lb higher; xbred lambs l-8d per lb higher; wethers, 48/64 lbs, l-8d per lb higher; ewes under 48 lbs, .{d per lb higher; 48/721bs l-8d per lb higher. Others are unchanged. The market continues firm all round, particularly for light weight lambs.
