JERSEY SALES

PRICES UP TO EXPECTATIONS. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., report having held a series of Jersey sales in Taranaki. Prices were fully up to expectations and as usual a large number of cattle were bought by Waikato, Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay breeders. The opening sale was held on behalf of Mr A. E. Western, “Brookside” Jersey Stud. At this sale buyers seemed to be working on strict limits and only a few exceeded the 25 guinea mark. Seventy head were sold, the cows averaging just over 18 guineas, the top price, 70 guineas, being paid by Mr H. C. Sampson, New Plymouth for “Brookside Delight,” a young cow. The 2-year heifers averaged 13 guineas, the yearling heifers 10 guineas, and the yearling bulls 13 guineas. The second sale was on behalf, of Mr W. Johnson, “Brookley” Stud, Stratford. Sixtyeight lots were sold, of which 44 were cows averaging 15 guineas. The highest price was 37 guineas. The 2-year heifers averaged 13 guineas, the weaner heifers 7 guineas, and the yearling bulls, 18j guineas. The third sale was held on behalf of Mr D. Yandle, “Punga Nui” Stud at Te Wera. This sale furnished striking proof that buyers now demand substantial production records to support cows of the most striking dairy type before they will pay big sums. The top price of the series was obtained at this sale, when the 5-year-old cow, “Punga Nui Joyce”—H.C., C.O.R. 7941bs fat—was sold to Mr A. Stewart, Tirau, for 135 guineas. Mr W. J. Freeth was the runner-up. The cows averaged 25 guineas, while the in-calf heifers averaged 16 guineas and the bulls 24 guineas. The last sale of the series was held in Stratford, when Mr Gadsby’s “Linden Grove” stud was dispersed. There was a very big attendance at this sale and good prices were maintained throughout. The top price was 81 guineas, paid for “Linden Grove Zoe,” by Mr J. L. Corlett. The cows averaged 25 guineas, in-calf 2year heifers 15 guineas, yearling heifers 13 guineas and bulls 29 guineas.
