WAIRARAPA CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY AT LANSDOWNE DURING WEEKEND. DRAW AND STARTING TIMES. The annual Wairarapa golf chamoionship tournament will be held on the Lansdowne links during the weekend. Good entries have been received, including those of several prominent players from beyond the Wairarapa. The conditions of play should be excellent. On account of the effect of the prolonged dry weather, which has affected most golf courses in New Zealand, there is a possibility that placing will be adopted during the tournament,'so as to protect the course and to make the conditions of play as' pleasant as possible. Placing enables a player to shift the ball to a position within a foot of where it is lying. Play will conclude on Monday. T. H. Horton, the present holder of the Wairarapa championship, is defending his title against fairly strong opposition. A. R. and A. F. Kitto, two scratch Wanganui players, will be competing. A. R. Kitto reached the semi-finals in he New Zealand tournament at HamIton two or three years ago. Another player who should be prominent is D. Graham, of Wellington, wider of the North Island amateur championship.
J. P. Hornabrook, the local crack and holder of the New Zealand open championship in 1937, no doubt will oe out to regain the Wairarapa championship. A Palmerston North competitor, N. H. Amon, who is on a 2 handicap, plays a very good game of golf and ie may have a surprise in store. B. Kiernan, of Greytown, showed up prominently in the open championship last year .and is likely to give a good account of himself.
