(Received This Day, 9.45/ a.m.) LONDON, May 31. “If any nation wants to fight, now is the time,” declared Lord Nuffield, who was the guest of the New Zealand Society at a luncheon. He added: ..“I cannot conceive anybody so foolish as to generate war at this moment, but I am able to reveal that Britain is . ready to meet any contingency. I only hope that after September’s lesson we shall preserve such a strong position that we will be able to prevent other countries molesting small peoples.”
Replying to Mr W. J. Jordan’s tribute for gifts to New Zealand, Lord Nuffield said: “If I had not done what I have, I would have been lacking in what I should have done for my fellows.” Lord Nuffield revealed that he was going to New Zealand for the seventh time as soon as possible. Mr Jordan announced that Lord Nuffield had accepted membership of the society with the words: “Yes, I feel almost a New Zealander.”
