POSITION IN BRITAIN MANY BUILDINGS CONDEMNED EXTENSION OF ASSISTANCE TO PUPILS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 30. The annual report of the Board of Education for the year 1938 contains evidence of continued progress. A total of 1983 scnool buildings was condemned as falling , short of modern standards and now they either have been closed or the defects remedied. The number of pupils granted aid in secondary schools reached a total of 470,000, with over 80 per cent of new entrants during the year coming direct from the elementary schools. Nearly 60 per cent of the entrants were admitted free. In nutrition there have been important developments, and the board.' at present is surveying the adequacy of the provision of free meals and milk in necessitous cases. The number of elementary school children receiving free milk was 614,000 and 97.bottles of milk were distributed free. For 360 scholarships for higher education awarded last year there were 6245 candidates.
