COUNTRY WOMEN
WORLD CONFERENCE OPENS IN LONDON DELEGATES FROM MANY NATIONS. HERALD ANNOUNCES SPEAKERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) LONDON. May 30. Farmers’ wives from many countries, distinctively clad, were eclipsed by the sole touch of English pageantry marking the opening of the conference of the world’s associated country women at the Central Hall at Westminster, the delegates representing four millions of their sex, including the women of Australia and New Zealand. An English touch was supplied by the only man present, namely, an official herald, arrayed and emblazoned in tabard and mediaeval smallclothes, who announced each speaker with a trumpet. England otherwise was drably represented in comparison with the striking peasant costumes of more imaginative countries. The New Zealand actress Marie Ney spoke a prologue. Lady Denman welcomed the delegates. Italians and Germans gave Fascist and' Nazi salutes.
