Richard Crooks, the celebrated American tenor, in a newspaper interview, stated that the New Zealand Government prevented him from taking away money he had earned at his concerts there, with the result that he invested it in the Dominion. He arrived in Sydney with 4s. He said he never had been so poor in his life. Nevertheless, he was not worrying about the money he had invested in New Zealand, which was a British country and was certain, to honour its obligations.
