GOLFING NOTES
RIVERSIDE CLUB PLAYERS COMMENT ON RECENT ROUNDS. SOME PROMISING YOUNG COMPETITORS. (By “Long Drive.”) Saturday proved to be a very cold day for golfers but a good number of members of the Riverside Club took part in the Stableford competition. J. Bell has- not struck form this season, there being too many “fives” on the card for a player x like him. ‘Long Drive” hopes he was hot caqght in the bunkers he has been making around the greens. F. Candy could not handle his irons on Saturday but was observed to be getting in some good practice on Sunday morning, which stqod him in good stead when playing in the match with Eketahuna. J. Wakelin recorded 35 Stableford points on Saturday. He is playing very consistently this year, after having been away from the game for two years.
A young player who joined the ranks last season. S. G. Wyatt, is playing well. It must be the chip shots he has been practising that helps him to keep his score down. H. Keisenberg came to light with a good round on Saturday and scored 32 points in the Stableford round. He did birdie three on the first and 18th holes but something must have gone wrong at number 11 (Hades). An off-day on Saturday .was experienced by F. Roff. He played, very well during the earlier rounds but it will not be long before he will be playing to his reduced handicaiJ again. R. Wearne played his usual steady round. The effect of the coaching he has received during the last few weeks is beginning to tell on his scores. Another good round and the handicapper will be after him.
Although off his game on Saturday, R. Hatch played well in the match with Eketahuna. G. Jones, winner of the junior championship last season, is playing steady golf this season. He is now playing on an 18/14 handicap. F. Pool played his usual round of 36 on Saturday. He is a left-hander and hits a very long tee shot, but his putting seems to be his downfall. A much improved player this season is B. Summers. He is now right back on his drive and is really hitting them instead of sweeping them away as he did last season. C. W. Walker is going strong this year. He also hits a long ball from the tee, but at present is a bit adventurous with his approach shots. Now he is living near the links the early morning practice must help him. He will be right out after a trophy or two at the R.S.A. tournament next month.
