PEACE PLEDGE UNION

AIMS AND OBJECTS. The Peace Pledge Union, a branch of which has been formed in Masterton. is the undenominational pacifist society which was founded by Canon Dick Sheppard in 1934. when he invited all those who were willing to pledge themselves to renounce war to send him their names. The society states that it is non-sectarian and that its aim is to unite in one body all those who are willing to embrace pacifism as a way of life: for its members believe that the conflicts which occur between nations, like those which occur between individuals, are only to be sei- , tied by conciliation. The activities of ' ■the Union are not confined to the mere registration of the names of those who are opposed to war, but are designed to promote the understanding and practice of pacifism. Pacifists all over the British Isles are now gathered into local groups which meet together to 1 study the personal, social and national implications of pacifism, to experience the good fellowship of practical peacemaking. and to carry out continuous peace propaganda’ in their respective areas. The formation of these groups was begun only in May. 1936, but already there are nearly one thousand in existence and their number is being added to daily.
