Witnesses of the tear gas bomb explosion in a Liverpool theatre state that a man left hurriedly after a lighted object fell in the centre of the stalls, after which there was a hissing sound and a sheet of flame. The building filled with yellow fumes. Attendants opened the exits and the audience of 200 staggered into the sunshine, coughing and with tears streaming from their faces. The total number treated in hospital was nine men and eleven women, including five girl attendants who remained at their posts until the audience left.
The bomb is stated to be similar to those left in two Liverpool cinemas recently, for which it is believed I.R.A. terrorists were responsible.
