The Rome correspondent of the “Times” says there is no reason to expect further Papal diplomatic action for peace. It is understood that replies to the Pope’s suggestion that England, France, Italy and Germany should confer, and discuss Italian and German claims are too negative, with the exception of that of Britain, to allow the proposal to be pursued. The hope of peace discussions, however, is not abandoned in Italy, which country would certainly respond to any French suggestion for talks under the Treaty of London, Article XIII.
