GREYTOWN

RETURNED SOLDIERS. ANNUAL MEETING. ' (“Times-Age" Special.) There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Greytown branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association which was held in the Fire Brigade Hall last night. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted and the committee was congratulated on its work for the past year. The election of officers for the year was then taken. The retiring chairman, Mr H. G. Carter, declined nomination for a further term.' Mr Carter stated that for nineteen years he had presided over the branch anti felt that he deserved a rest. Mr Carter then proposed that Mr J. W. Barnard be chairman. This was seconded by Mr J. W. Herod,and carried unanimously. Members of the committee elected were: Miss Higginson, Messrs H. G. Carter, J. W. Herod, R. O’Neale, R. Dyson, S. C. Shedden, W. Hutchins; secretary, Mr G. Robinson. The question of visiting the veterans in hospital was discussed and the committee was instructed to confer with headquarters in regard to this matter. A vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of those returned soldiers who had died during the past year. The defence policy was discussed, and although no motions were tabled, the general opinion was expressed that every support should be given to the Government’s hew defence policy. The question of a returned soldier being appointed as custodian of the Memorial Park was brought forward by a member present. After a full discussion it was left to the chairman to deal with the matter. The method of entertainment ajfter the Anzac service was' discussed. Miss Higginson stated that,in’ other centres a ladies’ committee provided a spread for the returned soldiers. She also stated that several ladies had expressed the desire to do the same in . Greytown. It was agreed to recommend the new committee to deal with this offer. After the meeting was closed supper was served by the committee. The annual. report stated that the collection and donations at the Anzac Day services amounted to £l3 14s 2d which is to go to the fund for providing headstones on the soldiers’ graves, but until the policy of the Government is known the work will be held up. j

Brown 95, J. Buck 84; total, 464. Motor Cycle on Fire. An alarm of fire was sounded last night. A motor cycle, ridden by a Maori youth from Wellington, backfired and burst into flames. Mi - Tui Morgan was quickly on the scene and beat the flames out before much damage was done to the machine.
