BADMINTON
SEASON OPENED AT PAHIATUA. , VISIT OF MASTERTON PLAYERS. Over one hundred spectators and fifty players were present at the Pahiatua Drill Hall last night when the Pahiatua Badminton Club opened the season. The chief event was an an exhibition singles match between Messrs P. Hawksworth and J. J. Payton. The game was a sparkling one and although the lighting facilities were not of the best, and Payton’s racquet “sprung,’ the match delighted the spectators; resulting 15/8, 15/2 in Ha wks worth’s favour. The men’s doubles match, P. Hawksworth and J. J. Payton v Sherrin and Jensen (the leading Palmerston North players) proved very interesting, and the Palmerston men gave Hawksworth and Payton a good game, the score being 15/11, 15/2 in favour of the Masterton players. All four players will meet again on Saturday at Palmerston North. The Pahiatua Club has been founded under favourable circumstances and should take a leading place among clubs in the Wellington province. There is a good hall at Pahiatua with 3 courts and the lighting is to be improved. Messrs C. J. Carle and G. McCullough, representing the Wairarapa Badminton Association, also made the trip, while representatives were present from Woodville and Palmerston North.
