SOUND FINANCES
WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING HELD THIS MORNING. GRANT TO CRIPPLED CHILDREN SOCIETY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The sound financial position of the county was a point in evidence at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council, held at Carterton today. Those present were the chairman. Mr D. McGregor and Councillors Alex. McGregor, C. A. Cameron, F. W. Joblin. F. Court, L. S. Gallon. W. A. Renall. E. W. Allen and A. E. Reid. „ A letter was received from the National Peace Council of New Zealand urging the county to support a world conference of economic and other qrActions affecting the peace of the woriu. “Practically every adult and child in France, America and the British Empire‘would support-such'a conference, but what is the use of talking peace conference to the dictators,” said Mr McGregor. “No doubt the majority of the people in their own countries would prefer a conference to a war. I don’t think much can be done as the other powers will not agree to a conference, but we can support the idea,” he said. The letter was received. “This society is doing good work and I would like to see the county make a donation of some kind,” said Mr McGregor, when a letter from the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society appealing for a grant was being considered. It was decided to grant the society £5. . The financial statement showed a credit balance of £2485 18s 7d, receipts amounted to £520 11s 6d, and accounts passed totalled £3246 13s 4d. Satisfactory progress was being made on the Wainuioru River Bridge, beams having been concreted and three fifths of the deck concrete placed, reported the county’s consulting engineers, Messrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt. The approach to the bridge at the Carterton end had also been formed and metalled. while at the Te Wharau end the block cutting from 22 to 29.5 chains had been excavated and metalled and was now being used by traffic. During the early portion of May the Mangatiriri River reached a record) low level and there was a possibility that dams would have to be put in the water-races to hold* the water, but rain fell and this was not necessary stated the Carrington Water-race report for the months of April and May. The crossings in the borough had been scraped and cleaned, stated the Taratahi Water-Race report for the same period. There was a small flood in the river on April 20, but no harm was done.
Metal had been graded in, watertables cleaned and general maintenance work carried out in the county, reported the Overseer. Eleven days’ crushing had been done at Gladstone for the construction work on the Gladstone-Longbush Road. CHAIRMAN RE-ELECTED. •Mr D. McGregor was unanimously re-elected chairman of the Wairarapa South County at its annual meeting at Carterton today. ,
