A sudden 7ft rise in the level of the River Rhine, owing to heavy rains and melting snow, has flooded and compelled the .abandonment of 30 miles of Germany’s Siegfried line between Kehl and Neulauterburg. The French Maginot line, being on a higher level, was not affected.
