Mr A. Morris Jones mentioned at a recent meeting of the executive of the Forest and Bird Protection Society that careless burning of fern and scrub had caused, much damage to native bush in various parts of Marlborough Sounds, particularly in the Lower Pelorous Valley. A farmer of the old type in that valley had told hunters to burn bracken wherever they pleased on his estate. Several members gave the opinion that the time had come for a strict strong control of scrub-burning, which frequently caused fire to spread far beyond the boundaries of the estates where it had started.
