MATERNITY CONTRACTS
POSITION IN AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 23. As a result of additional contracts being signed this week, 20 of 28 licensed maternity hospitals in the Central Auckland district have accepted service under the maternity section of the Social Security scheme. It was stated by officials of the Department of Health that, out of a total of 186 maternity beds, 134 were now available under the Act. There has, however, been no change in the position of medical practitioners. HASTINGS RESOLUTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, May 23. At a meeting of the Hastings branch of the New Zealand Labour Party last night the following motion was passed: "That the Hastings branch of the New Zealand Labour Party deplores the antagonistic attitude of the B.M.A. toward the medical provisions of the Social Security Act, 1938, and assures the Government of its wholehearted support in any action that may be deemed necessary to ensure that the medical services provided in the Act shall come into operation at an eajly date.”
