MANY RECRUITS
TERRITORIAL QUOTAS FILLED. BREN CARRIERS TO VISIT MASTERTON. “Recruiting for the Territorials has been quite satisfactory for the past three months,” stated Sergt.-Major C. E. Rogers, of the Masterton Defence Office, this morning. The mounted rifle quota for the area from Masterton to Woodville had been more than filled, he said The. district’s quota was forty men, whereas there were 58 at present in camp at Waverley from this area, while there was a waiting list of men wishing to join up. Similarly, both the mortar platoon and the rifle and light auxiliary platoon were filled and there was also a waiting list for these sections. About sixty men had been enrolled in Masterton in the last three months. • Following on the Prime Minister’s announcement, it appeared to be likely that those on the waiting list would be quickly absorbed. This was quite independent of the appeal for offer of service in the New Zealand national military reserve. Sergt.-Major Rogers stated that two Bren carriers would be visiting Masterton on June 3, when a demonstration would be given showing the efficiency of these light tanks. A light automatic .303 was mounted on these tanks alongside the driver and a spare was kept at the rear. The Bren was taking the place of the Lewis gun. ENROLMENTS BEGIN. From thirty to forty applications were made at the Masterton Post Office this morning for cards in respect to offers of service in the New Zealand Military Reserve.
