MINIATURE RIFLE MATCH. CARTERTON TEAM TO PLAY SOUTH FEATHERSTON. (“Times-Age” Special.) Sewell, A. Pinfold, N. F. Teal, J. King. B team: H. Torrey, L. Tunnicliffe, D. Gayfer, G. Goodin, J. Duffy. Emergency, C. J. DeLacey. OBITUARY. DEATH OF MRS K. RICHARDSON. The death occurred in a private hospital in Palmerston North on' Saturday of Mrs Kate Richardson, of Kimbolton, after a serious operation. The late Mrs Richardson was predeceased by her husband’ some years ago., Mr James and Miss Johanna Gorman, of Seddon Street, Carterton, are brother and sister of the deceased, who also leaves three young daughters, the eldest 18 years of age, with whom the deepest sympathy will be extended by a large circle of friends. GOLF MATCHES. CARTERTON v. FEATHERSTON. The A and B teams of the Carterton and Featherston- clubs played games on the Featherston and Carterton links respectively on Saturday, the results being as follow (Carterton mentioned first in each game): —A team at Featherston: Dudson and Fisher beat Rowles and Allen; Goodin and Taylor lost to Wilson and O’Neale; Hart and Shankland lost to Fauntin and Rowles Junr.; Clark and Riggs all square with Bloxam and Jeffrey. Singles: Dudson beat Rowles; Fisher beat Allen; Goodin all square with Wilson; Taylor lost to O’Neale; Hart lost to Fauntin; Shankland lost to Rowles Junr.; Clark beat Bloxam; Riggs lost to Jeffrey. B team at Carterton: Hughes beat McHqrdy; Kiddie beat Card; Smart beat Lawson; Whitburn beat Howells; Colson beat Davis; B. Beaven beat Carlyon; Forbes beat Hoby; Lane beat Lovegrove. Medal Competition. The best cards returned in a medal competition played at Carterton were: —Tankersley, 95, 32, 63; F. Hill, 89, 20, G 9; Dwane, 93, 24, 69; B. Booth, 75, 4, 71; Candy, 89, 18, 71. CALF CLUB. CARTERTON GROUP MEETING. A meeting of the Carterton group of the Boys and Girls’ Clubs was held on Friday, Mi’ E. L. Rayner presiding. The treasurer reported a credit balance in the Post Office Savings Bank of £42 8s 6d. It was left to the chairman to consult with the Gladstone Herd Testing Association .relative to allowing all calves out of tested herds in the Carterton district to compete for the Gladstone Herd Testing prize. This request is being’made owing to some farmers in the Gladstone district being connected with another testing association.

It was decided that all children showing calves not in the winning list be given a monetary prize. The delegates to the Wairarapa Centre were instructed to obtain a ruling on the marking of calves. . Rules and regulations as suggested by the Executive were discussed and agreed to as under: —That all spectators be kept outside the ring. That the marshal be allowed to assist the judge or judges in arranging stock. That the judges’ dicisions shall be final in deciding which class calves shall be judged in, and no calf shall be judged in more than one breed class. That there be a class for junior pupils judged on dairy type and handling, the winning calf to be eligible for championship. Mr Martin Parker will donate a cup Tor this class. z That the prize money shall be: Rearing and handling (senior), all calves, 10s, 7s 6d, ss; dairy type, separate class for Shorthorn, Jersey, Friesian, Ayrshire and any other breed, 5s and 2s 6d. That the Gladstone Herd Testing Association’s prize (if donated) be awarded to the best calves out of dams tested by the Grey town Herd Testing ’Association the previous year. That the prizes for the championship calf, dairy type, for the Borthwick Cup, be 15s, 7s 6d, ss, and for the yearling calf which was entered and judged last year, 15s, 10s, 'ss. That a class be added for secondary pupils who have attended any primary school and who are resident in Carterton group area. Mr E. Rayner has donated a miniature cup for this class. The class will not be eligible for Borthwick’s Cup. That the prizes for the best reared lamb (longwool or shortwool) be ss, 3s, 2s.

MR AND MRS R. BYERS. CHURCH FAREWELL. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church was crowded to the doors last evening when the Rev. Ralph Byers preached his farewell sermon to a large congregation. Mr Byers who is leaving to take up the charge at St. Alban’s, Christchurch, took for his text the First Book of Kings, Chapter 19. parts of verses 11, 15 and 18, and the title of the sermon was '‘The Place to Start Again.” Appropriate hymns were sung during the evening. At the conclusion of church service the large congregation adjourned to the Presbytery Hall, where Mr C. L. Reynolds presided. Mr Reynolds referred to the departure of Mr Byers, who had been with them for a period of four years. The members of the congregation were very sorry to loose his services but what would be their loss would be St. Alban’s gain. The proceedings were commenced by the singing of a hymn, followed by a song rendered by Mr Keenan. Mr Jas. Fisher spoke on behalf of the Carterton congregation and the

P.W.M.U.; Mr W. Wilson, on behalf of West Taratahi; Mr Duncan McGregor, for the Gladstone congregation; Mr A. Ross, for Longbush; Mr Trueman, for the Bible Class Mission, and the Rev. D. McNeur, Lansdowne, on behalf of Wairarapa Presbytery, all of whom referred eulogistically Jo the sevices rendered by Mr Byers, and wished him a happy time in his new charge at Christchurch. A song was nicely sung by Mrs W. Worsfold. Mr Reynolds referred to the good qualities of the Rev. Mr Byers, and to his excellent service in various directions. He said that the congregation would miss him in many ways. He asked Mr and Mrs Byers to accept, on behalf of the congregation, a pair ol fireside chairs and their sori, David,' a silver knife, fork and spoon. Mr Byers on behalf of himself, his wife and son, thanked them for their beautiful gifts and said that he would always cherish the memory of the days spent in the Carterton-Gladstone Church Circuit. He asked the chairman to accept on behalf of Ms Byers and himself a pair of vases to be used in the church. i,

The Rev. J. Davie, of Knox Church, Masterton, pronounced the Benediction after which the large assemblage were provided with supper. Mr and Mrs Byers and child will leave for Christchurch tonight. New School Headmaster. Mr H. J. McKenzie, chairman of the Carterton District High School Committee has been notified by the Education Board that Mr W. Martin, ol Kelburn, Wellington, has been appointed headmaster in succession to Mr W. G. Fossette and will take up his duties on July 1. Funeral of Mrs Lawrence. The funeral of the late Mrs Alexandrine Lawrence took place yesterday when there was a very large cortege. Many beautiful wreaths were forwarded showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Prior to the funeral leaving the deceased's late residence a short service was held by the Rev. R. Byers (Presbyterian minister) who also conducted-the service at the graveside. The pall-bearers were: Messrs L. H. Smart, Gibb Johnston, F. T. Watson, R. Roydhouse, J. Steel and Geo. Brown. The funeral was one of the largest seen in this district, many friends from Wellington and other distant centres being present. Swan Season Closes. The last day for shooting swans expired on Friday and as a result parties were at various positions around the ,Lakc. Several Carterton parties were among the lucky shootists to obtain the maximum bag. Junior Hockey. In the Carterton A-Dalefield game the former won by 3 goals to 1. The goals were scored by Butcher and D. Deller (2) for Carterton and L. Sayer for Dalefield. The game was an excellent exhibition of the code. Messrs J. Finn and E. Fleet controlled the game. Farewell Gathering. On Saturday evening the suppliers to the Taratahi Dairy Factory gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs Jas. Fisher, Clareville, to bid farewell to

Mr and Mrs George Thomson prior to their departure to Whakatane, where Mr Thomson has accepted a position under the Dairy Board. Mr Thomson had been manager to the Taratahi dairy factory for many years prior to its ceasing to exist. At a, suitable interval. Mr Jas. Fisher, chairman of directors to the dairy company, referred to the splendid qualifications of Mr Thomson as a factory manager. They were all sorry that circumstances had compelled the factory to cease activities after a period of 58 years, said Mr Fishet. The directors and suppliers and Mr Thomson had always worked amicably together. The settlers were all sorry that Mr and Mrs Thomson were leaving the' district. Mrs Thomson would be missed for her iwork in social functions. On behalf of the suppliers he had pleasure in asking Mr and Mrs Thomson to accept on behalf of the factory suppliers, a beautiful rug as a small token of esteem. Musical honours were then accorded Mr and Mrs Thomson. Mr Thomson thanked the suppliers for their gift and the chairman for his kindly remarks. Games and supper brought a pleasant gathering to a close.
