The useful life of bluegum power poles was mentioned by the engineersecretary of the Ashburton Electric Power Board (Mr H. G. Kemp) in his report to the annual meeting of the board. Mr Kemp said that 555 bluegum poles had been replaced during the year. There still remained 1024 in the board’s reticulation system. "While many of these are in need of replacement, it is interesting to note that their age ranges generally from about 13 to 15 years,” he added. “Sambo,” said the employer to his coloured servant, "you are an hour late this morning.” "Yes. sah. I know it, sah. I was kicked by a mule on my way. sah,” replied Sambo. “Well, that ought not to have detained you as much as an hour, you know." "Well, you see, boss, it wouldn’t have, but he kicked me de other way.”
