WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT GLADSTONE. INTERESTING TALK ON JAPAN. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Gladstone Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on Thursday in the Gladstone Hall with Mrs McKay presiding. Owing to the unavoidable absence of the delegate, the report of the Wairarapa Federation meeting was held over until June.
The questionaire on domestic help in the district was discussed and answers decided upon. Continuing the Golden Thread subject, “A Country of the Pacific,” a roll call, “Something of Interest About Japan,” produced a wide variety of facts. There were few exhibits however, in the display of Japanese work. The subject of Japan was continued in a most interesting talk by Mr Tate on Japan and her relations to other parts of the Pacific. His first hand knowledge of the countries and peoples described and his wide understanding of their past history and present relationship ensured ,an exceptionally informative talk for which he was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. In the competition for a doorstop costing not more than one shilling, Miss A. Bubb was the winner with Miss B. Dalgleish second. Mrs Riddell won the best bloom competition with a spray of polyanthus rose with Miss C. Cooper second with a fine head of pink geranium. Afternoon tea was served by Miss Cooper and her helpers.
