SHOOTING OF DOCTOR
FIGHT WITH CHINESE BANDITS. EX-MASTERTON RESIDENT PARTICIPATES. Details have been received in Masterton concerning the death in China of Dr. Eaton, of Palmerston North, after a fight with bandits in which an ex-resident of Masterton participated. It appears that the compound at the Presbyterian Mission Hospital was attacked by armed bandits. When a robber attempted to shoot Miss Cook, of the staff, he was pursued by Dr. Eaton and the Rev. E. G. Jansen, formerly of Masterton. As they turned a corner of the building they were fired on and Dr. Eaton was shot. Mr Jansen helped to remove the wounded man to the hospital where he was attended by a Chinese doctor. Though three of the Chinese nurses gave blood transfusions, Dr. Eaton died. The Chinese felt the shame of the incident very deeply and when Dr. Eaton was buried in the foreign cemetery in Canton they sent many floral tributes.
