HUGE CENSUS
COLLECTION IN GERMANY CONTEST OVER POLISH MINORITY. FLOOD OF PROPAGANDA LEAFLETS. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.35 p.m.) BERLIN, May 17. Seven hundred thousand census officers collected forms covering a population of eighty millions throughout Germany, including Austria and Memel. A Polish newspaper printed here was confiscated after publishing a facsimile of the census paper in which sections dealing with the mother tongue and racial affinity were both filled in as Polish. The southern part of East Prussia was flooded with leaflets, firstly from the Poles and then the German reply. The latter tells the inhabitants that even if they talk a local Polish dialect, their language and racial affinity are German.

It is feared that owing to intimidation, only a few hundred thousand will appear in the German census as Poles, whereas the most reliable estimate of the Polish minority is 1,500,000.
