STOCK MARKET
SALE AT JOHNSONVILLE. FALL IN CATTLE PRICES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Large yardings of cattle and sheep were offered by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., at the Johnsonville live stock sale held yesterday. Only a few pens of prime heavy bullocks came forward, the balance of the yarding consisting chiefly of mediumweight and unfinished bullocks. Prime quality cattle met with a ready sale at prices 5s to 7s 6d a head down on those ruling last week, and mediumweight bullocks were 10s a head easier, plain and unfinished 15s to 20s a head. The penning of cows was not up to the usual standard. No heavy cows came forward. Prices were fully 5s to 10s down on those ruling last week. There was keen competition throughout for runners and vealers with prices showing no alteration. The wethers penned were of light and mediumweight quality. No heavyweight sheep came forward. Good quality wethers met with a ready sale at prices showing a slight easing tendency, and unfinished and plain sorts were down fully Ist to Is 6d a head. The majority of the ewes yarded comprised chiefly mediumweight ewes, with a few pens of extra prime heavyweight sheep. Prime quality ewes sold with little alteration, though light and mediumweight ewes were easier to the extent of Is 6d to 2s a head. A good sale resulted for all classes of lambs, with little alteration in prices.
ADDINGTON VALUES. WEAKER TONE IN MARKET. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) . CHRISTCHURCH, May 17. In the main fat stock sections of the live stock sale held in Addington today there were larger entries. Prices, except for fat sheep, tended to weaken. The entry of about 2500 store sheep was one of the smallest of the season. There was not a wide selection, but the quality of the older sorts was better than usual. A draft of 410 sound and failing-mouth Corriedale ewes sold at 10s 6d to 10s lid; a line of young ewes at 12s 7d; a truck lot of five-year ewes at 8s; and a line of two-tooth wethers at Ils 6d. The fat lambs were the poorest conditioned lot of the season. Butchers’ sorts sold at prices showing a slight improvement on last week. Lighter lambs had a dull sale at export-schedule rates. The entry of fat sheep comprised about 4500. In the middle stages values were about on a level with those of a week ago, but in the closing stages there was a sharp recovery of about Is or more a head. The. cattle market concluded draggingly and there were more passings than usual. Good steers t and heifers were easier by about 10s'a head, and inferior steers and cows were easier by up to 20s. Porker values hardened in the middle of the sale, but slipped over the last two races. Choppers sold at unchanged rates. Baconers were forward in heavy numbers. Values for the best classes, though a shade easier, maintained a satisfactory level; but plain and unfinished sorts were 3s to 4s a head easier. MASTERTON SALE. FAT SHEEP FIRMER IN PRICE.
