EKETAHUNA

TRAFFIC TALLY. ON HAMUA-HUKANUI ROAD. ! (“Times-Age” Special.) I A three-day traffic tally was taken on the Hamua-Hukanui Road by the County Engineer on April 18-20. from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The average number of motor vehicles per day was 145. Previous tallies were taken over the period from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.. which used to be the old standard. Adjusting this last tally to conform to the previous ones, the number of motor vehicles was 129 per day. In May, 1937, the tally was 75 per day, and in November. 1934, the number was 42 per day, so that the traffic has more than trebled itself in less than five years. Alfredton Resident Farewelled. Mr A. Dawson, who has been in the employ of Messrs A. H. Herbert and C 0.,. Alfredton, for the past 41 years, has accepted apposition in the New Zealand Military Forces, and will leave shortly to take up his new duties. Mr Dawson was entertained at a farewell party in the Alfredton Hall, when Mr D. Smith presented him with a signet ring on behalf of his many friends. Road Improvement. Reporting to the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council concerning the Alfredton Riding, the engineer stated:—The upper section of the Puketoi Road was graded up and the culverting nearly completed before the weather broke. Further grading in the early summer should put this 4|mile section in good order. Rakanui Road was graded, and the machine has been engaged in grading the roads in the Alfredton area. Further metalling was carried out on Saunders’ Road. Approval for widening corners on the Waihoki Road has been received from the Public Works Department. Akitio metalling will be completed this week. The Waihoki Road will be shaped up on the worst sections.

At a meeting held in Eketahuna a branch of the New Zealand Defence League was formed. Mr A. H. Herbert was elected president. Those present were elected as a committee, with Mr W. J. Henderson secretary pro tern.
