GOLF COMPETITIONS. . HUME CUP WON BY M. WAIWERA. (“Times-Age” Special.) The first round for the Campbell Cup is to be played on Saturday and the draw is as follows: —S. Thomas v. J. Carter; G. Munro v. D. Jones; S. Hall v. J. Riwai; H. Carter v. M. Waiwera; R. McDougall v. B. McMaster; G. Sutherland v. T. Hume; G. Hall v. K. Waiwera; D. Tikao v. W. Charteris; M. McLeod v. M. Herangi; F. Lovegrove a bye. Owing to unforeseen circumstances the inter-club match against Hinakura which was to have been played at Hinakura at the weekend was postponed to a later date. In the Doughty Cup competition, J. Carter beat G. Munro and halved with S. Thomas. G. Munro lost to S. Thomas and D. Jones beat M. Herangi. The following is the draw for the first round of Miss McDougall’s trophy: --Mrs McKenzie v. Miss McDougall; Mrs Sutherland v. Mrs Bragg; Mrs Herangi v.' Mrs Carter; Mrs Tikao v. Miss Cock; Mrs McLeod v. Mrs Warren. The final round for the William Hume Memorial Cup was played by members of the local golf club on Saturday. The weather again was ideal and the greens and fairways in splendid order. At the conclusion of the second round T. Hume (15) and B. McMaster (8) were leading with a net aggregate score of 142, with M. Waiwera (22) and K. Waiwera (21) with two strokes more. M. Waiwera, one of the club’s promising young players, played brilliantly in the final round to return a net. score of 64 and an aggregate of 208, which made him the winner of the cup for the season. He also won the trophy donated for the best net score in the final round. B. McMaster and T. Hume also played well, and returned cards of 71 and 73 respectively. The former finished second with a net score of 213, with T. Hume two strokes more. S. Thomas also produced good golf and returned a net score of 67. His game has improved wonderfully and with a little tuition and play with more experienced players he will certainly make his mark in golf. ' Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Gordon Sutherland entertained a large number of. friends at their residence recently. Bridge games helped to pass away a very enjoyable evening. Mrs Malcolm McLeod, who was in hospital for a slight operation, has returned to her home, Palliser Bay. Mr and Mrs Plummer, who were the guests of Miss J. Scrimegour, have returned to Masterton. Mrs T. Te Maari is visiting relatives in Wanganui. Mrs Waiwera and her brother, who were visiting here at the weekend, have returned to Wanganui. Mr Johnson, Palmerston North, was a visitor to the Lake Ferry at the weekend. Mr and Mrs Ron. Muir, who. have been residents of the district for the past twelve months, will shortly leave for another locality. Mr and Mrs Tot. Burling and family, of Kaitoke, will shortly take up their residence in this district. Mr Harold Wilton has severed his connection with the Matawhero Estatp and will leave the district within the next few days. Mr and Mrs Watson have returned from the South Island. A Large Groper. A groper estimated to be the largest caught at Palliser Bay for some years was obtained tby Mr Charlie Bernsen, at Haumenga recently. The fish weighed in the vicinity of lOOlbs. Euchre Party and Dance. A euchre party and dance was held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance. Mr C. Todd won. the men’s prize with D. Kitney second, and Mrs Cowan the ladies’' prize with Miss Lena Matenga second. The music for the dance was played by a local band. Women’s Institute. The birthday meeting of the local Women’s Institute will bo held tomorrow. It is expected that a large attendance from other branches will be present. Cheese Factory Closed. The local cheese factory has closed down for the season.
