There was a large attendance at the annual meeting' of the ladies’ branch of the National Party, held in the Anzac Hall yesterday. Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford, the president, presided and gave a very comprehensive report on the work done during the year, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. . The election of officers is as follows* —President, Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford (re-elected); vice-president, Mrs J Carne Bidwill; executive, Mesdames B. Buck, Arch Clark, J. R. Matthews, W. Barker, J. Carne Bidwill, A. Campbell Pearce, Max Turner, S. G. Grant and Misses G. McTaggart, June Matthews and Olive Nix; treasurer, Mrs Roy Donald (re-elected); secretaries, Misses Jean and Flora Donald (reelected.

Business of a| routine nature was discussed. The holding of a ball on July 24 was discussed, and the arrangements are to be made at a later date. After the conclusion of the annual meeting Mr Cheviot Bell was introduced and delivered an interesting address, touching on import control, social security and many other matters of vital interest. Mrs Arch Clark , proposed a very hearty vote of thanks to Mr Bell, which was carried by acclamation. Explosions on Ranges. The continual explosions on theranges in the vicinity of Featherston has caused varied comment and speculation by people passing through. In nine cases out of ten, this has been presumed to have been gun fire, but it is really nothing more than the preparation for the new hydro-electric power line. Shooting Licenses. From a report obtained from the local Post Office the number of shooting licences issued this season is slightly less than the number issued last year. Perhaps the increase in the fee from 25s to 30s is accountable for this. Girl Guides’ Camp. Miss Ruth Herrick, District Commissioner for Girl Guides in New Zealand, was a recent visitor to the Tauherenikau racecourse, where the Girl Guide camp is to be held in January of next year. It is expected that 500 or 600 Guides will be in camp including a number of Guides from overseas. Miss N. Vfilson, of Bulls, Dominion Commissioner for Wolf Cubs, will pay an official visit to Featherston shortly when she will meet the local Girl Guides, Brownies, Scouts and Cubs. Permits Necessary. It does not appear to be generally known that permits are required for shooting, fishing or camping on the Wairarapa Lake Domain. With a view to keeping a better check on those using the Domain, Mr G. W. Benton has been appointed a ranger. Petty Stealing. Several cases of petty stealing have been reported recently in the township. The Public Library was entered and an electric light bulb removed from the reading room. Motor Accidents. Several motor accidents were reported during the weekend. On the Kahutara Road three cars were tangled up. It is stated two cars were parked opposite each other when a third came along and found there was not sufficient room to pass between the two parked cars. On the Rimutaka hill several motor cyclists skidded and were thrown to the ground, receiving more or less serious injuries. Busy Time Expected. The staff al the local Post Office are anticipating a particularly busy time from now to the end of the month, as all motor vehicles must be re-licensed by June 1. Motorists would be well ■ advised not to leave this until the last few days, as it would greatly save the officials’ time as well as their own. Red Queen Competitions. Two competitions were drawn recently on behalf of the “Red” Queen, Miss Ngaire Tocker, the results being as follows: —Cake: Mrs W. Aitken, Box of tea: Mrs D. Ingley (202 correct number of beans in bottle). Personal Items. Mi’s Gordon Burt and her son Peter left today for a holiday to be spent in Sydney. Mr C.
