IRONIC HUMOUR
COMMENT ON MUSSOLINI’S SPEECH USE OF DISTORTING MIRROR. ATTITUDDE OF .DEMOCRACIES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, May 15. The “Daily Telegraph,” commenting editorially on the Duce’s speech, says “there is certainly a bitter and ironic humour in the circumstances that the democracies are reproached with not being sincerely devoted to the cause of peace by a leader who boasts of the subjugation of Abyssinia and the ‘union’ of Albania and Italy. The democracies are certainly guilty of organising the defence of their independence and freedom, but, even in the distorting mirror of the Duce’s argument, that act can hardly be made to look aggressive except to those threatening their independence." PLEDGED ALLY GERMAN PRESS APPLAUDS SPEECH. LONDON, May 15, The Berlin correspondent of the British United Press says that the entire German Press prints Signor Mussolini’s “We will march with Germany” as a full-page headline, emphasising that this is the Duce’s first speech at Germany’s pledged military ally.
