DEATHS AT BELITZA
BULGARIAN ALLEGATIONS COLD-BLOODED MURDER BY RUMANIANS. REPLY MADE IN BUCHAREST. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, May 15. The Sofia correspondent of “The Times" says that 'Rumania will be asked to explain the alleged coldblooded murder by Rumanian police using machine-guns of 22 Bulgarianborn Rumanians at Belitza on May 9. The Bulgarian version of the incident is that 70 Bulgarians mobilised at Belitza deserted and fled to the frontier. Twenty-five were arrested and maltreated, and made to sign an unintelligible declaration. All but three were shot dead by the guard in Indjekeuy forest. The survivors escaped and told the story. The official version from Bucharest declares that the victims were Rumanian citizens, not Bulgarian comitadjis, but highway robbers who attacked motorists, including M. Zamferescu, director of an aeroplane firm, and General Fortescu, robbing them of £350.
The police, it is claimed, were justified in shooting them for trying to escape while under arrest.
