RURAL TELEPHONES

< ADJUSTMENT IN EAST COAST DISTRICT. A satisfactory adjustment is in view regarding certain rural telephone services in the Tinui and Whareama districts. Farmers in these areas made representations to the authorities recently. protesting against the increased charges for their telephones.. After further consideration of the matter it was decided to approach the P. and T. Department asking for exchanges to be established at Tinui and Whareama. but a later proposal, which appears to be more satisfactory to the parties concerned, is for an increase in the numbers on a party line, thus reducing the cost to the individual subscriber. By this means subscribers are able to retain their telephones at much the same cost as formerly.
