The Governor-General, who with Lady Galway spent some days trout fishing, has gone into residence at Government House, Auckland, where he will remain for some time. Their Excellencies will give a debutantes’ ball on June 14.
The Hon P. Fraser, Minister of. Health, left Wellington" for the South Island by the interisland steamer last night. The Hon F. Jones, Minister of Defence, left Wellington for the South Island last night. The Hon P. C. Webb, Minister of Labour, is expected to return to Wellington from the South Island The death occurred on Sunday at the Pahiatua Hospital of Mrs Marjorie (Madge) Thrupp, wife of Mr Charles James Thrupp, of Konini. Mr Harry Byrn, Junr., who had to enter Masterton Hospital a few days ago on account of an obstruction in his throat is now making a good recovery and has returned home.
Mr P. Saunders, of Wellington, who was killed in a motor accident near Wellington on Sunday night, was a brother of Mr A. I. Saunders, a member of the Masterton staff of the Bank of New South Wales.
Mr M. E. Lyons, a member of the Christchurch City Council, and secretary to the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, was announced last night as the National Party’s candidate for the Christchurch South by-election, a Press Association message reports. Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., Wanganui, and Mrs Salmon will leave Wellington tonight by the Awatea on an extended holiday. They will travel through Queensland on a motoring tour and will then visit California. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., will be relieving magistrate in Wanganui for a few weeks and the duties will then be taken over by Mr A. Coleman, S.M., who is at present engaged on Court of Review work,
The funeral of the late Mr L. B. Murray took place at the soldiers’ plot in the Masterton Cemetery yesterday. A service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. J. Davie, and a number of beautiful wreaths testified to the esteem in which the late Mr Murray was held by a wide circle of friends. The pall-bearers were: Messrs H. G. Alexander, H. J. Brass, R. Whyborn, W. J. White, C. H. Devenport and A. E. Prentice. The funeral, of Pilot Officer R. J. McCrorie, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, who was one of the three victims of the plane crash at Wigram. took place at Aramoho Cemetery yesterday, and was largely attended. The Rev A. F. Pair conducted a short service at the residence and officiated at the graveside. The pallbearers were members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Members of the Wellington West Coast Regiment were present and supplied a firing party. Mr F. W. Gilligan, headmaster of the Collegiate School, of which Pilot Officer McCrorie was an old boy, attended the funeral.
