DENSITY TO BE SPELLED

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Density a three’year-old filly by Pink Coat from Denise, and owned by her breeder, Mr D. Grant, of Timaru. is to go into winter quarters. Density possesses a great turn of speed and it was thought that she would develop into a brilliant sprinter this season. Although some of her efforts suggested that this would be the case, she has hardly lived up to her reputation, for from a dozen starts she has registered only two wins and five minor placing®. From these efforts she has earned for her owner £770 in stake money. There is every indication that she will come up for her four-year-old season in a more solid condition and the prospects are that she will take a high place among the sprinters.

Useful Form. . Wexford Bridge is due to make hts first appearance as a steeplechaser at Washdyke this week. In his trials at Riccarton Wexford Bridge has done well and as he showed useful form over hurdles two seasons ago these is every reason for the belief that he will make good with a little experience. An aged brown gelding by Shambles from Scintillation, Wexford Bridge is the only jumper owned by Mr J. H. Grigg in T. H. Gillett’s stable at the present time.

Good Progress. Wagner, always lightly-fleshed but carrying more condition than usual, has made good progress since A. J. Martin placed him in work again a few weeks ago. A five-year-old brown gelding by Siegfried from the Austra-lian-bred Rossendale mare Polonaise, Wagner won two races last season and Was also in the money on seven other occasions. Wagner is on the verge of leaving hack company, but with the Weights he has to carry he has to have everything in his favour to win. The South Canterbury meeting at Washdyke this week will probably see him in action for the first time since early in the season.

Every Port. When she first made her appearance at Ellerslie, the Stonyhurst-bred filly Every Port was very backward in condition, but during the last few weeks she has made considerable improvement. Formerly trained by H. and A. Cutts at Riccarton, she has only started once, when she ran unplaced as a two-year-old in the Trial Stakes at Ashburton last season. She has plenty to

recommend her on breeding, being bj Winning Hit from Sailor’s Love, who is a full-Sister to the notable mare Fast Passage, winner of the Winter Cup, New Zealand Cup. and Auckland Cup.

Improves With Age. Flame Queen, who scored a win and was twice second in her three races at Blenheim, like nearly all the stock m Seigfried. is improving with age. She is a half-sister to Iddo. their dam being the King Soult mare Belgian. Queen.

Fine Stayer. Fireguard, runner-up to Padishah m the Grand National Hurdles at the beginning of the season, has been nominated for the Kingsdown Hack Handicap and the Pukaki Hurdles at Washdyke. Owned and trained by Mr D. P. Wilson at Mosgiel. Fireguard is a fine stayer, but he is always set a hard task through an inability to keep pace with his fields early. Last season he won three races and was not out of a place in four starts early this season. He is a sixyear-old bay gelding by Lord Warden from Kerb, dam also of Trivet.

Lady Graceful. . „ , , Lady Graceful, the New Zealand Oaks winner of 1935, is due to make a first appearance for the season among tlie open sprinters at Washwyke. Unsoundness has been responsible for Lady Graceful being lightly raced, but she has been working well and may yet repay her owner-trainer, Mr R. D. Westenra, for his patience. .Mr Westenra also has a useful hack in Wardress which should reward him with a winning turn at any time.

Bred to Improve. The Cardinal who ran third in the Champion Hack at Egmont, was bred by Mr G. A. Kain, of Orari, and is a three-year-old by Night Raid from the Clarenceux mare Palestrina, who won the Oaks for Mr George Gould in 1921. The Cardinal is related to Rabble, Rabble’s dam Jael, being a half-sister to Palestrina. This is The Cardinal’s first season. He has yet. to win, but has once or twice been placed in strong hack class, another third earlier in the season being behind Coronation in the Champion Hack at Te Aroha. He is bred to improve.

Eulogy Line. Brazil, who won the Champion Hack Plate at Hawera, gave R. Ireland his first success as a jockey, and it was also the horse’s first win for his owner, Mr R. H. Lowry. Brazil is by Pombal from Episode, and is another winner from the Eulogy line. Looks Well. One of the best looking of the rising two-year-olds who have made their appearance at Ellerslie is the colt by Iliad from the English mare. Anne Shakespeare, who is from the same family as Persimmon, a Derby and St Leger winner. Under the care of E. George, he is tlie property of Mrs W. D. Graham, who purchased him at the Trentham sales for 500gns. The appropriate name of Stratford has been claimed for him. Unlucky. Failure to get to the front in the early stages proved expensive for supporters of Orwere at Pukekohe, but for all that he ran quite a good race, and his fourth placing indicated that he may have been a shade unlucky. He is engaged in the sprint races at Te Rapa and may reveal improvement. Prince Acre showed <his appreciation of the easier track condition.s and it looks as if he will have to be remembered when the turf becomes really ' heavy-.
