FIRE IN GREYMOUTH

CAFE BADLY DAMAGED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ♦ GREYMOUTH, This Day. As the result of a fire at four o’clock this morning, serious damage was done to the interior of a brick building occupied by the Central Cafe. Mrs Pope, the proprietress, her son, J. Pope and a. friend, Miss M. Coyne, of Westport, were sleeping in the rear of the premises and escaped by a skylight. They scrambled over the roofs of adjoining buildings and were rescued by a ladder. The brigade made a good save. The fire started in the kitchen, which was gutted. The dining room was damaged by smoke, water and heat. Little damage was done to the back premises. There were insurances of. £1250 on the building with the South British Company and £2OO on the stock and fittings with . the Alliance Company. Mrs Pope is a'heavy loser.
