“LEARNER” PLATES

NEW SYSTEM FOR MOTOR CYCLISTS. PROBATIONARY PERIOD. As from this week a motor cyclist before obtaining a drivers’ licence, provided he passes a preliminary test, must carry for three months two “learner” plates, one at the front and one at the rear of the machine. This new clause is included in the amendments to the Motor Drivers’ Regulations, all of which are effective as from yesterday. During the period in which a motor cyclist is carrying “L” plates he must not exceed 40 miles an hour, and must not carry a pillion rider. At the expiration of the three months the learner will be subject to a further test and, if this is satisfactory, the foregoing restrictions will be removed. In Great Britain the “L” plate system for learner drivers is used for all classes of vehicles and its introduction in New Zealand was suggested by Councillor H. H. Mawley at a meeting of the Masterton County Council on his return from a trip Home.
