PARIS LIGHTS
REGULATED BY THE SUN. ' The tunnels which have been built at all the important roads out of Paris in order to avoid cross traffic are lit by lights whose intensity is regulated by the sun. If the day is dull, the lighting in the tunnel is dimmer, but if the sun shines brightly then all the lights are automatically more powerful. The object is to regulate the lighting so that the motorist entering or leaving the tunnel shall not be dazzled by too great a change of light. Another device ensures that in the event of a failure of electric light, which would plunge the tunnel dangerously into darkness, within a second an emergency plant will supply current independently. Darkness affects an electro-photo cell which automati - cally sets a Diesel plant working.. The electro-photo cell regulates yet another safety device. If a vehicle which is too high enters the tunnel it intercepts a photo-electric ray and immediately loud speakers begin to shout tothe driver to stop and back out. Unfortunately the inventor did not invent an apparatus for spanking little boys who wave a prop in l the air in order to hear the loud speaker’s bellow.
