TABLE TENNIS

WINTER SPORTS CLUB OPENS NEW ROOMS. PLAY IN DIXON ST HALL. The Masterton Winter Sports Club opened its new table tennis playing rooms in the Dixon Street Boxing Hall last night, when there was a large at tendance of competitors. A combined doubles Yankee tournament was decided, the final being won by Sanson and Greenless, who conceded 13pts against Miss White and W. Pointon, the score being 31/17. Players expressed themselves as being well satisfied with the general arrangements of the hall and club members are looking forward to a successful season of activities. Supper was served and the evening proved a thoroughly enjoyable one in every way. MEETING OF WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. DEVELOPING THE GAME. At the recent general meeting of the Wairarapa Table Tennis Association, several important developments wen discussed. The following officers were elected: President, Mr E. T. Bliss; vice-prcst dents, Messrs H. Myers, senr, M. Winslade J. Haywood, P. H. Andrews, C. Spiers and Mrs Jarrett; secretary, Mr W. Day; treasurer, Mr J. Haywood; committee, Messrs H. and N. Myers and A. Jones; auditor, Mr G. Joy. The annual general meeting has been fixed iii future to be not later > than April 18, the actual date to be decided by the committee. The committee wished to correct two statements made in their annual report relating to the annual championships: Ladies doubles, won by Misses Larsen and Williams; C grade, clubs’ championships won by Mauriceville West. 1 Owing to a possible shortage of tabic tennis balls clubs were urged to place their orders with the treasurer, Mr J. Haywood, without delay. This factor was viewed seriously as the welfaie of the game entirely depended on a satisfactory supply. “One of the most important aspects discussed at the meeting, states a circular to all clubs, “was the present system of championships and club contacts The whole matter was completely reviewed and the following motions were adopted: (1) To take advantage of a suitable room that was offering to run championship events, competitions, etc (2) That inter-club competitions be confined to play in the room in question under the jurisdiction of the association. (3) That clubs be encouraged to arrange friendly evenings with one another with a view to encouraging-the game as well as the social aspect. Summed up, the progress of table tennis in the Wairarapa has not develop ed to the extent that was hoped. The committee submit that this is largely due to the fact that club engagement) have in the past been of a competitive basis instead of a social basis. Under the new arrangement the competitive spirit will be reserved for the games played in the association room and the clubs will be encouraged to meet one another at regular intervals on < friendly social basis, Such evening will be run entirely by the respective clubs concerned and will have only nominal supervision from, the association. The association has confidence in the new scheme and hopes for the whole-hearted support of the affiliated clubs. The position as outlined above is of such importance that each clul is earnestly requested to discuss the matter fully and report their decisior to the executive without delay. Th< executive propose to call a meeting early next week to review club's state ments and to invite members from each club to confirm their club’s opin ’ion and to hear the final decision of th< executive. “It has been well recognised in the past that various activities have no’ had the unanimous approval of al clubs and on this occasion the commit tee is taking the opportunity of plac ■ng the onus on the clubs themselves The question of full satisfaction in th. matter can be decided only by a ful (muster of delegates to the meeting.”
