PERSONAL
The Governor-General, Lord Galway, and Lady Galway left Wellington last night by the Limited Express for the north. They will go into residence at Government House, Auckland, for the next few weeks. Sir Charles Norwood, who has been on a visit to Masterton, returned to Wellington today. Mr J. Brett, of Masterton, has received word that his son, Mr F. J. Brett, of Auckland, has been accepted for service in the Royal Navy and has joined the Philomel. Saturday afternoon next will mark the -27th anniversary of the Masterton Harrier Club, and also the 27th year that Mr and Mrs Geo Shaw (patrons) have hospitably entertained the Masterton Harrier Club. Mr J. G. Stewart, manager of the Waipukurau branch of the Bank of Australasia, leaves shortly on a visit to Melbourne. He expects to be away about six weeks, during which time his place will be taken by Mr C. B. Kyngdon, of Masterton. Mr G. Biss, who has been representative for Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co, Ltd, at Martinborough for the past seven years has received notice of his transfer to Masterton. Mr G. McLachlan, of Masterton, has been appointed to Martinborough to succeed Mr Biss. The funeral of the late Mr A. Meyhew took place in Masterton yesterday. The Rev Father Moore officiated. Wreaths were sent by the Masterton Odd Fellows Lodge, P. and T. staff and others. Messrs W. Darvill, P. Reynolds, J. Murdoch, F. Davey, G. Cornick and R. Baikie, members of the Odd Fellows’ Lodge, acted as pallbearers. The interment of the late Mr W. Simpson, of Hinakura, took place at the Masterton Cemetery yesterday. The Rev Canon Sykes, of Greytown, conducted a service at St Matthew’s Church and also officiated at the graveside. There was a large attendance of settlers from the Hinakura and Martinborough districts, and many beautiful wreaths were in evidence, including those from ’ the following:— Chairman and councillors of Featherston County Council, Hinakura School Committee, Hinakura school children, and Messrs Pain and Kershaw, Ltd. Messrs L. S. Nicol,- A. E. Prentice, W. J. WhiteJ N. H. Thomas, G. T. Cornick and R. Whyborn (all members of the R.S.A. acted as pall-bearers.
