GREYTOWN

NEW ZEALAND DEFENCE LEAGUE. LOCAL BRANCH FORMED. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance at the meeting held in the Town Hall last evening when an address was given by the Hon W. Perry, M.L.C., on the necessity of a large land force for the defence of New Zealand. The Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, presided over the meeting. Mr Perry expressed his pleasure at seeing so many ladies present. In outlining the need for the urgent expansion of the land forces of New Zealand, Mr Perry referred to the present unrest in Europe and to the danger in which New Zealand might be placed. In the event of a crisis New Zealand wanted trained soldiers and not recruits. Mr W. Barnard, Wellington president, was also present and outlined the aims and objects of the league. Mi’ Horton moved and Mr J. E. Montgomerie seconded that a branch of the New Zealand Defence League be formed in Greytown. This motion was carried unanimously. A provisional committee was formed, with Mr J. F. Thompson as convenor, the members being Messrs J. W. Barnard, H. G. Carter, W. A. Tate, A. W. Horton, F. C. Bunny, R. Dyson, J. Montgomerie, G. Te Whaite, and Mesdames Knell, J. F. Thompson, and Misses Eagar and L. Higginson. After the meeting over forty signed the membership form and paid their subscriptions. Euchre Party. There was a large attendance at the euchre party held in the Fire Station on Wednesday evening. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs McKenna 1, Mrs Mark 2; men, R. Mark 1, J. Meharry 2. Personals. Miss Florence Hobbs, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs G. Robinson, Main Street. Rugby. The Greytown senior Rugby team to play Gladstone at Gladstone on Saturday-is as follows: —Brice, Brunton (2), Sugrue, Habib, Parker, Flood, Stringfellow, Workman, Humphrey, Jury, Hood, McCalmont, Flute, Manihera, Peterson.
