MASTERTON HARRIERS

27TH ANNIVERSARY TO BE CELEBRATED ON SATURDAY. SOME INTERESTING HISTORY. On Saturday afternoon next at the Masterton Park Oval the 27th anniversary of the Masterton Harrier Club be fittingly observed by the club. Twenty-seven years ago, on May 15, the club was formed. The minutes of the first meeting state inter alia:— “A meeting convened by Messrs J. Bradbury and Kingston was held in Murray’s Hall (Messrs Hugo and Shearer's premises today) on -May 15, 1912, there being a good attendance. Mr S. R. Edwards presided. Mr J. Bradbury moved that a club be formed and named the '’Masterton Harrier Club.” The motion was seconded by Mr J. IV. Nicholson and carried unanimously. The election of officers resulted:—Patron, Dr J. A. Cowie; president, Mr S. R. Edwards; vice-presi-dents, Rev A. L. T. Thompson, Messrs G. R. Sykes, D. J. Cameron, F. Hood, P. L. Rollings, R. Gray; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Drummond, club captain, J. Bradbury; management committee: Messrs J. Bradbury, S. F. Kingston, E. M. Flanagan, E. C. Fisher, J. W. Nicholson, J. Jorgenson, H. Cooper and A. Long. It was decided to affiliate with the Wellington Amateur Athletic Association. The club’s colours were white shorts, with purple stripes down the sides, and a purple hoop around the singlet. Subscriptions were fixed for members at 5s and members under 18 years of age 2s 6d. The club’s preliminary run was fixed for Tuesday evening next. Mr Dickson invited the club to run from his residence at 54 Worksop Road at 7.30 p.m., the official opening being fixed for the following Thursday. The meeting, concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair.” The first points prize race was held on June 6, 1912, from the club rooms to Mr G. R. Sykes’s residence, where members were hospitably entertained. The results were as follows: —J. Miller, 1; J. Bradbury, 2. ’ Yoeman service to the club has been and is still being given by Mr J. J. Hunter, with 21 years' service to his credit. Messrs G. R. Sykes and B. Iveson hold outstanding records officially in connection with the club. Mr .Sykes having been vice-president for 27 years and Mr Iveson for 25 years, both still occupying office. Programme for Saturday:— Harriers from the Scottish Club (Wellington) Palmerston North, Woodville, Dannevirke and Napier have signified their intention of being represented on Saturday-next, while the Kiatere Club will have a very strong contingent. Messrs V. P. Boot and W. A. C. Pullar, will in all probability be taking part, in the track events. The programmes is as follows: —Junior race of 880yds; 3 1-8 miles scratch invitation race; ladies’ race of 50yds; old members’ race, 440 yards; 1 mile steeplechase; married men’s race, 100 yds; single women’s race; 440yds interclub relay (4 men each running 110 yds). The following well-known members of the Scottish team will take part:— J. Riddington. G. Foster, A. Bourgeois, F. Taylor, A. Sutherland, C. Brown, J. Garty, D. McGrue'r, R. Ballantyne, J. Calscn, A. Tcnks, J. D. Templeton, D. Garty, F. Silver and A. Brown. Admittance wdl be free, and a dance at night for the visiting harriers vzill round off the day’s celebrations.
