POPE’S PEACE MOVES
HONESTY ACKNOWLEDGED IN GERMANY CUT CONFERENCES DISLIKED. ACCEPTANCE OF PROPOSALS UNLIKELY. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Dav, noon.) LONDON. May 9. “The Times” Berlin correspondent savs the Pope’s peace moves are one of the chief subjects of the discussions between Herr Hitler and Herr von Ribbentrop at Berchtesgaden. Official opinion indicates that Germany is at least prepared to acknowledge the honesty of the moves and will not treat them like President Roosevelt’s message, although the Nazis’ dislike of international conferences makes the acceptance of any proposals of the kind unlikely.
The British United Press Paris correspondent says M. Daladier and M. Bonnet discussed the Pope’s representations, which are described as not of a concrete character, but rather in the nature of suggestions. SCANDINAVIAN STAND. DECISION TO MAINTAIN NEUTRALITY. , (Received This Day, 1.0 p.m.) STOCKHOLM, May 9. The Scandinavian Foreign Ministers issued a communique stating that they had decided to maintain last year’s declaration to remain outside all groups of European Powers and to do their utmost to avoid being involved in the event of war. They will jointly welcome an expression from other countries in respect of the integrity and independence of northern countries. The communique adds that the results of the conference will be submitted to the respective countries.
